The History and Rise of Modern Billiards in the Philippines: From Hobby to Social Sport

Billiards has always been part of Filipino life, woven into neighborhood halls, weekend hangouts, and countless late-night bonding sessions.

Today, the sport is rising once again, not just as a casual pastime but as a modern, social activity embraced by young professionals. You’ll find it everywhere: in malls, coworking hubs, and sports centers where teams clock out of work, gather around the table, and dive into quick racks for a relaxed yet competitive game night.

Let’s take a closer look at the history of billiards in the Philippines and how it grew into one of the country’s most beloved sports.

A Look Back: The History of Billiards in the Philippines

The history of billiards in the Philippines spans more than a century, with the first tables appearing during the American period. They were initially introduced in leisure clubs, where Filipinos first learned the fundamentals and began to appreciate the precision and strategy behind the sport.

As Manila’s sports centers expanded through the 1960s and 70s, interest surged. Local billiard halls became go-to hangout spots for barkadas looking for an affordable and engaging pastime.

The game appealed to many because it was easy to learn, inexpensive to play, and endlessly entertaining. With just a few coins, players could stay for hours and challenge anyone willing to take a shot.

This early era helped shape the foundation of Philippine billiards. Neighborhood players competed daily, local legends emerged, and soon, Filipino cue artists started making waves internationally.

Everything changed in 1999, when Efren “Bata” Reyes won the World Nine-Ball Championship. His victory placed the Philippines on the world stage and inspired generations of players who saw billiards as a sport where creativity, precision, and heart mattered far more than size or strength.

As the decades passed, the Philippine billiards timeline grew richer, marked by global tournaments, SEA Games medals, and the everyday stories of players who grew up shooting balls on shared community tables. The legacy stands strong today, but it is also adapting to a new era that is more modern, social, and accessible than ever.

Why Young Professionals Are Bringing Billiards Back

The sport has transformed to match today’s highly interactive lifestyle. Here are some of the reasons young professionals are rediscovering their love for billiards:

1. It is social but skill-based

Young professionals want activities where they can talk, laugh, and compete in a friendly way. Billiards lets people move, interact, and stay involved even when they are not the ones shooting. It is casual but still sharp enough to feel rewarding.

2. It is perfect for groups

Large teams of 20 to 40 people need activities that work in rotations. Billiard tables make this easy since players can switch in quickly without long downtimes or complicated setups.

3. It works rain or shine

For HR teams planning events, billiards is a dependable choice. Unlike outdoor activities that get disrupted by weather or traffic, billiards is an indoor, controlled, and comfortable experience.

4. It feels nostalgic, yet new

Many young professionals grew up watching Efren Reyes or picked up a cue stick during college. Returning to the game now feels both familiar and renewed, with modern tables, improved lighting, and cleaner, well-maintained sports centers.

5. It is accessible

Beginners can quickly pick up the basics, especially with approachable guides like how to play billiards. The learning curve is friendly, allowing casual players to improve naturally through repetition and practice.

How Puyat Sports Sparked the Comeback of Billiards

Puyat Sports has played a major role in this resurgence, offering well-kept tables, bright and inviting spaces, and safe venues that welcome both serious players and casual groups.

Beyond its well-maintained venues, Puyat Sports’ impact on billiards goes much deeper. The renewed excitement around the sport today can be traced back to the long-running efforts of brothers Jose and Aristeo Puyat, who championed Filipino cue artists at a time when their victories abroad were barely recognized at home.

In the late 1980s, when local players were beginning to make waves internationally, the brothers pushed for greater visibility by organizing and televising major tournaments, even shouldering full production and airtime costs because networks refused to cover billiards, then seen as an unruly pastime.

Their groundbreaking move came in 1989 with the nationwide broadcast of Billiards Showdown, a high-stakes face-off between rising star Efren “Bata” Reyes and the country’s top player at the time, Amang Parica, held at Ali Mall in Araneta City.

By the time Efren Reyes clinched the 1999 World Championship in Cardiff, Wales, Filipinos across all walks of life were more than ready to embrace both the athlete and the sport.

The Puyat brothers continued to back local talents like Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante in international tournaments, providing full travel support and allowing players to keep all of their winnings.

Their decades-long advocacy laid the groundwork for billiards’ mainstream comeback—one that today’s sports centers, including Puyat Sports, continue to fuel.
